Happy Independence Day, Liberia: A Legacy of Freedom, a Future of Purpose

The flag of Liberia.

About this story

A message for Liberia’s Independence Day from AACN founder Dr. Bryan Harris.

By Dr. Bryan Harris, Founder, Association of Africans and Caribbean Network (AACN)

In 1847, Liberia became the first independent African republic, blazing a trail not just for itself but for a continent yearning for self-determination. Liberia advocated, mentored and invested in other African nations’ journeys toward independence. Our independence was not just for us; it was a torch passed forward.

As we celebrate, I call on all of us, especially our brothers and sisters in the diaspora, to revive that vision and walk boldly in that legacy.

At AACN, our iCare Initiative carries this torch forward by uplifting displaced immigrants through job readiness and empowerment, cultural integration, and community-building with dignity.

“Skills must not be buried; they must be shared. Communities rise when we pour into them.”

So today, as we wave both the Liberian and American flags, may we lift our hearts in gratitude, purpose and unity. Liberia, may your legacy continue to light the way.
